![]() This avoids the gridlock situation of sitting through an entire change of signal without having even one car able to turn left. The Southern California practice on uncontrolled left turns is to jam as many cars into the intersection (box in England) during the green light, so that they can finalize the turn at the change of signal. These lights are being changed to the design shown. There are many poorly designed intersections where a green light over the left turn lane has been misconstrued to give the left turn right of way with disastrous consequences. A green light (not arrow) permits you to turn left but oncoming traffic is not stopped and has the right of way to which you must yield. The take-home message that generalizes to all signalling: A green ARROW pointing left implies that oncoming traffic is stopped by a red light. Once there is a break in the on-coming traffic, you can turn left. The sign is reminding you that you need to yield to that traffic (allow them to advance by NOT turning left in front of them). This is confirmed by the metal sign that is posted to the right of the signal which says: "Left turn yield on green" which means that since there is no 'green left-turn arrow', you will be turning left when the regular green light is illuminated during that time, the opposing traffic is free to move toward you. In other words, the left column of lights do not function. Another vote for pulling into the intersection and waiting but do not turn your wheel to the left until you're ready to start your turn so as to avoid being 'bumped' by the person behind you into the oncoming lane of traffic (very unlikely but it could happen!)Īs far as the above explanation as to the left and right column in the traffic light is concerned, ORDINARILY, the left column of lights would control the left turn - there would be a green 'left arrow' that would appear from time to time telling you to make your left turn (and you would be able to do so because the opposing traffic would be halted when there is a green LEFT TURN arrow illuminated).īut it looks like the green arrow has been disabled on this traffic signal.
